When it comes to Roulette, there are a large variety of aspects that you may not know about. While some of these may focus on how to win more consistently etc., many people may not know that the game has a long and somewhat complicated history. Much of this has been in a few different countries around the world. As such, it’s worth looking at how the game evolved and how it’s changed depending on which country it’s played in.
Many people believe that roulette originally got its start in China, although this version would have been somewhat different from what we know and love today. With that in mind, animals were used in the place of numbers, and the game was played on a stone wheel that was able to spin. Another way that these ancient game can be traced to the modern day one is that it had an engraving of the number 666 in the middle of the wheel; when the numbers of a modern wheel are added up, you’ll get 666. However, it should be noted that it’s believed that Dominican monks took the game with them to Europe; it’s also believed that these monks changed the animals into numbers during this time.
France is the country most associated with modern day roulette, and this is because of a few different reasons, with the most notable being that the term ‘roulette’ means ‘little wheel’ in French. On top of this, many people claim that the modern version of the game was invented by French mathematician Blaise Pascal when he was trying to create a perpetual motion machine. Furthermore, other people attribute it to Dominican monks, as we mentioned above. Having said that, though, it only began to gain popularity after the French Revolution and since the late 18th century.
It should be noted that the version of roulette played in France at this time is almost identical to the version played today. Over time, this had led to further credence that it was the French who played a pivotal role in the games development and growing popularity. During this time, some prominent Frenchmen named Louis and Francois Blanc began making some changes to the game to help increase the houses advantage. One of the most notable of these changes was the introduction of the number 0. This also added to the mystique of the 666 number, with both men claiming they struck a deal with the Devil to learn everything about the game. However, these changes wouldn’t be made to the game until the following century, when roulette was widely popular around the world.
During roulette’s rise in popularity in France, it also became increasingly popular in a variety of other countries. It was alongside this rise in the 18th Century that the game began to turn up in the likes Russia and Turkey, where it also began rising in popularity. In the 19th Century, it also began to make an impression in England and other countries close to France. By this point one of the few places not to have a modicum of roulette was the United States and other countries close to the continent.
This all changed during the 19th Century when French refugees brought the game to Louisiana and other growing cities in America. Similar to many other countries in the previous two centuries, roulette became quite popular over the following few decades. Over the centuries since, roulette has continued to evolve and change as more and more people begin playing it. As such, there are dozens of different varieties to choose from.
