History of Three Card Poker
Three Card Poker is a modern twist on an old classic. While the casino version was first introduced in the 1990s, its roots go back centuries. The earliest known ancestor is “Three-Card Brag,” a fast-paced British card game popular in the 16th century, which shares similarities with both poker and India’s Teen Patti.
The version we play in casinos today was created in 1994 by Derek Webb, a professional poker player and game inventor. His goal was simple: to design a poker-style game that was faster, more exciting, and easier to run in a casino environment. Traditional poker was too slow and complex for casual casino players, so Webb streamlined the format while keeping enough strategy to keep it interesting.
To make the game appealing for both players and casinos, he introduced a structure with fair house edges and bonus payouts that could compete with blackjack and roulette. Despite this, casino operators in the UK and US were initially hesitant, unsure whether a simplified poker variant would catch on.
That changed in 1997–1998, when Three Card Poker was introduced at a casino in Mississippi. The game quickly gained traction due to its simplicity, speed, and profitability. From there, it spread across North America, Europe, and eventually into online and live casino platforms—where it remains one of the most popular live table games available today.
Today, you’ll find Three Card Poker tables at nearly every top online casino, offering a perfect balance of chance, choice, and fast-paced fun for both beginners and seasoned players.
